Hideous Gnosis was a black metal symposium held in New York City. It was chock full of intellectual lectures explaining the radical theories behind the phenomenon known as 'black metal'. Lucky for us, some of the presentations have been made available for download. However, the presentations are distributable as one file, which is not ideal, but better than nothing.

Free funerals for drunk drivers?

A funeral home in Georgia offered free funerals on new year's eve. Sounds generous, but there were several catches that made it very unlikely that anyone would claim the freebie. In fact, in the 10 years that McGuire, Jennings and Miller (funeral home) have been running Operation Stop and Think not one person has received a free funeral. Hypothetically, if you are drunk and you die in a road accident you (or your family) will receive a free funeral. However, they admit that "This contract is only a tool to get people's attention" and may not be a legitimate offer.

Tips for dopeheads

New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has released a pamphlet with information about how to inject heroin. Supposedly, this information will assist such users to  prepare drugs carefully and how to care for veins to avoid infection. The DEA does not approve of the guidebook and special agent John Gilbride has called it a "step-by-step instruction on how to inject a poison." However, users will surely benefit from advice such as "only boot once or twice in one shot."

The Death Metal Rooster

Here is a rooster that may have a career as a death-metal singer in the future. It has a unique call that cuts short of the usual cock-a-doodle-doo and descends into a gutteral bellow.

Symphony of Science: The Unbroken Thread

Yet another Symphony of Science composition has been released. The series of autotune-meets-science began with Carl Sagan and has now grown to include many other big names in science and biology. This song is called The Unbroken Thread and features David Attenborough, Jane Goodall, and Carl Sagan remarking upon the wonder of molecules and the diverse tree of life. Jane Goodall says it all when she observes that "there isn't a sharp line dividing humans from the rest of the animal kingdom, it's a very wuzzy line. It's a very wuzzy line, and it's getting wuzzier all the time." Very wuzzy indeed.
